Wales is a part of the United Kingdom and is located to the west of England. Featuring the ruins of monasteries as well as standing castles with beautifully landscaped gardens and parks, Wales attracts visitors from both the British Isles as well as the rest of the world. The countryside of Wales is dotted with small villages and towns where visitors can readily see that while British, the Welsh retain a distinctive culture of their own.
Wales vacation rentals are located in Cardiff, the capital and largest city, as well as in smaller cities and towns. A popular attraction in the capital is Cardiff Castle, which departs from typical castle construction by incorporating Victorian architecture that reveals its fairly recent origin. The site of Cardiff Castle, however, was occupied from a much earlier age, featuring in the Roman occupation of Wales during the first century. Another Cardiff attraction is the Millennium Stadium, which can host over 70,000 rugby fans and features a retractable roof.
Fans of the 1960s television show "The Prisoner" will want to visit Portmeirion, the small village where is was filmed.
Also away from Cardiff is Llandudno, which offers visitors a chance to visit a peninsula located between two vast limestone headlands. Located on the peninsula is a traditional resort town that features Victorian architecture and an ocean pier that extends several hundred yards into the sea. Traditional forms of entertainment dominate the oceanfront promenade at Llandudno, including "Punch and Judy" puppet shows that have been popular since medieval times.
