Cape San Blas is located in Gulf County, Florida and consists of a narrow strip of land connected to the mainland by other narrow land bridges. Located slightly west of the mainland, Cape San Blas extends into the Gulf of Mexico and is situated on the larger land structure known as the St. Joseph Peninsula. It is about ten miles to the southwest of Port St. Joe.
Lighthouses on Cape San Blas
One of the reasons to stay in Cape San Blas holiday homes includes the area's fascinating history of lighthouses. The cape has had four in all, the first of which lasted only a few years. Due to gales, hurricanes, and beach erosion, several lighthouses were destroyed. The fourth and final lighthouse on Cape San Blas was constructed in 1883. Made of an iron frame, it was the most successful lighthouse to date. This lighthouse is still in operation today and flashes beacons that can be seen up to 16 miles away.
