Mexico is commonly divided into three great regions: the mainland, the Yucatn peninsula, and the long, narrow peninsula known as Baja California, which is separated from the mainland by the Gulf of California, formerly known as the Sea of Cortez. Cabo San Lucas is located at the very tip of Baja California -- as deep into Mexico as one can go from the United States without entering the mainland.
Vacation homes in Cabo San Lucas allow visitors to stay for a while and absorb the authentic Mexican flavor that permeates the air and culture here. One of the most distinctive natural landmarks in the areas is the Arco de Cabo San Lucas, a natural rock arch located along the coast. The sea is important here, as local events can attest to; each year, Cabo San Lucas is the home of the largest marlin tournament anywhere in Mexico or the world. Cabo San Lucas is also a popular destination for those who yearn to whale-watch; every winter, pods of whales pass close by the shore, even bearing their calves in the warm waters alongside Cabo San Lucas.
Many visitors travel by air, arriving at Los Cabos International Airport. However, another common way to get to Cabo is by cruise ship.
A unique local attraction is the Cabo Wabo Cantina, a nightclub and restaurant owned by Sammy Hagar of the rock band Van Halen. At least once a year Hagar plays live at the club with his band, the Wabos. This frequently occurs on Hagar's birthday, October 13th.
