New Smyrna Beach is Rich in New World History

History buffs, especially those whose main interest is the early days of the United States, could hardly do better than to book a long stay in a New Smyrna Beach vacation rental. This city on the Atlantic coast of Florida has had no fewer than four different flags flying over it. First, it was the single largest English attempt to colonization in the New World, then the area we now call Florida came under Spanish control. Florida joined the United States in 1845 but shortly afterward succeeded to join the Confederacy.

Now, of course, Florida is a U.S. state once again, but all that rich history can still be explored in towns such as New Smyrna Beach. Perhaps that is why this town of just 20,000 permanent residents draws more than a million visitors every year. The town features a historic district registered with the federal government. This district, bounded by Ronnoc Lane, Smith Street, Riverside Drive, and U.S. Highway 1, features more than 300 historic buildings, many of them dating back to the 1920s and beyond.

History is not the only reason to visit, though. New Smyrna Beach also hosts the Atlantic Center for the Arts and has been recognized as one of the nation's top small cities for the arts. Throughout the year, residents and tourists can enjoy a variety of art shows that feature not just local artists' paintings and sculptures, but also the performing arts.

Swim, surf, bike ride, kayak, go boating or fishing, shopping or visit Mickey, you can do it all from here! 13 miles of white sand, consistently voted one of the "Best Beaches". Excellent fishing, golf, historical sites, and eclectic shopping and dining experiences along historical Flagler Avenue and Canal Street. New Smyrna possesses a distinct hometown quality reflected in its cracker architecture, lush tropic landscape and community. From fresh seafood to steaks and pasta on the waterfront, or under an umbrella at a sidewalk cafe. At the end of the day, retire to charming Palm Cottage and relax. Disney World is 1 hour south, Daytona Beach is 20 minutes north and Kennedy Space Center is 30 minutes south also.
